Access to education is critical in fighting poverty. Without an educational solution Yemen will continue to be impoverished. Yet even a basic level of education can help people escape extreme poverty. However more than 2 million Yemeni children are out of education due to severe lack of teachers and education facilities.
There have many calls for a rethink of educational strategies in developing countries away from traditional academic models towards. The traditional western model of academic learning in literacy, maths, science and social sciences is neither beneficial nor feasible in Yemen. When education needs to have immediate short-term impact, committing to years at schooling has little practical value when children face risk of death from malnutrition and effect of poverty. Yemen's finite resources are being allocated and even wasted on education that fails to empower Yemenis.
Yemeni has been in crisis for decades that both destroyed educational infrastructure and prevented further investment. Education is the key to escaping crisis but it requires an infrastructure that is inclusive accessible and resilient. Our actionlabs are dedicated to exploring and prototyping a digital learning infrastructure that provides multiple pathways to learning and support for Yemenis
Now more than ever Yemen needs an educational curriculum that is aligned to closely its context. It needs to advance knowledge around key technologies that can empower Yemenis. An objective of our action labs is on designing curriculum that targets the science and mechanics of key technologies such hydroponics, alternative energy, anaerobic digestion or desalination.
The digital divide in Yemen is extreme and creates a major impediment for learning and the country's development on many fronts. The internet and digital technologies hold massive potential to fight poverty. We are committed to develop solutions that address the different digital barriers Yemen faces from reducing the cost of data, establishing digital hubs and improving access to technology.
